Shirley J. Murphy

Shirley Jean Murphy was born September 19, 1944 in Hominy, Oklahoma to the union of Elverse and Mary Hoyle. Shirley departed this life on March 5, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, a brother and her beloved husband Robert Murphy. Shirley was raised and educated in Hominy, Oklahoma. Shirley was the baby of the family and she often reflected on the joyous opportunities this created. In high school she played the clarinet and marched in the band. Shirley moved to Kansas City, Missouri and found her calling in the medical field working for many years in leadership positions at Blue Cross from which she retired. She met and married Robert Murphy Sr., in Kansas City. They were married for 54 years before his passing. Shirley and Robert were an adventurous couple. They enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as membership in the Prince Hall Masonic Family and was a member of Melrose Chapter #55 Order Eastern Star. They even owned and operated a bait shop in Hominy. Shirley was a member of Centennial United Methodist Church. She loved her congregation and spoke of how fulfilling it was to work in the food pantry. Shirley will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Special acknowledgements should be made to Robert "Nippy" Murphy her stepson who was always there when Shirley needed him, and all he ever asked for was an egg sandwich. Special love to Ericka and Pe'Aire her great niece and great-great nephew who cared for before her passing.
