Obituary for James Garrett Jr.

James Garrett Jr. Was born to Bertha Mae Gault and James Garrett Sr. October 11,1937 in Conway, Arkansas. At an early age James relocated to Kansas City, Kansas to live with his stepfather Eddie Lewis Jr. Where he graduated from Northeast Junior High School in 1953. In 1954 James married Roberta Griffin and to that union 3 sons were born, Sanford, Marcus, and James. In 1966 James started working for General Motor until he retired in January 2003. He also was a business owner with James Griffin a man he called brother-in-law as a Carpenter until 2018. In 1972 James met and married Nancy Y Smith who had 3 children of her own. Sonya, Yvonne, and Tyrone, until they welcomed 1 daughter Rachel to their union in 1974 having a blended family. James has been a member of Eighth Street Baptist Church since he was a teenager under the leadership of I.H Henderson. His love for this Church led him to serve under all Pastors, with current Pastor Donald Slack become a great friend and brother to him. James has always been a very active member of Eighth Street. From serving as Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, or all-around right-hand man. All you had to do was call and he would be there enjoying his time as a missionary, going as far as Africa to the neighbor next door. James was also a very active member of the Laymen, where he was celebrated for his service. If you ever had the pleasure to sit and visit with James you knew about his hobbies, which was family, fishing and sports, his favorites being Football (any team) and Basketball (college). James is preceded in death by his parents, Bertha Mae Gault, James Garrett Sr., Eddie Lewis Jr. His son Tyrone Morris, brother*s Telastus Lewis and Vernon Johnson, Cousin Julia DeBuyzer. James is survived by His loving wife Nancy Y, Garrett, son*s Sanford (Dana) Garrett, Marcus (Beverly) Garrett, James (Gloristine) Garrett. daughter*s Rachel (LaDon) Henderson, Sonya Smith, Yvonne Morris, brother Damon Lewis, and Sister Marjorie Lewis. 17 Grandchildren, 43 Great Grandchildren. Aunts, Uncles, Sisters-in-law, Brothers-in-law, Nieces, and Nephews. Special Cousins Porter Halcrombe, Louise Spencer, Travis Halcrombe, Gean Young, Dale Halcrombe, Robert Nichols, Doris Washington and a host of other Family and Friends.
