Obituary for Mellernee C. Moten
Scripture:*To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.* * Ecclesiastes 3:1
Mellernee C. Moten was a woman of grace, strength, and unwavering faith. Born May 24,1936, she lived a life that reflected the wisdom of Ecclesiastes “understanding that there truly is a time and place for everything. Throughout many years of dedicated work *beginning in domestic service and concluding her career as a production line supervisor at Hallmark Cards” she proved that perseverance and responsibility create pathways for others to follow. Her favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, a time she cherished for its joy of family and reflection on how much there is to give thanks for.
She loved reading, traveling(especially with her daughter Carmen and her traveling club), and cooking for those she held dear. Mellernee also made sure her children’s closest friends were always welcomed into her home and hearts as part of the family. Even through health challenges, including surviving what doctors call a “Widow Maker” heart attack, she remained steadfast in caring for herself for many years before finally entrusting her care to her loving son Stephen Williams. She was an active and faithful member of St. Matthew*s AME Zion Church of Kansas City, where she served joyfully as a Sunday School teacher.
Mellernee was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Hendrix; her children, Regina Martin and Curtis Williams; and her siblings Edward Smith, Robert Hendrix, Sonja Hollins, Dora-Mae Myers, and Theresa Hendrix. She is survived by her sisters Mae Hendrix and Sharon Hendrix.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Carmen Dixon (Rufus), Willard Parham Jr., Stephen Williams (Alice), Craig Moten, and Darren Moten Sr. (Sharon). She also leaves behind a loving family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless extended family members and friends who were blessed by her kindness, wisdom, and open heart.
Her life mantra remains a legacy to all who knew her: “You are better than no one, and no one is better than you.”
