Obituary for Joyce Marie Meyers

God called His child, Joyce Marie Meyers (82) home on October 6, 2016. Joyce Marie Meyers was born on August 8, 1934 to parents A.B. and I.Q. Rice (Lemons). Joyce was the youngest of five and grew up in her home town of Hallettsville, Texas. Joyce tended Faith Temple Church of God in Christ where she found Christ under the guidance of Elder C.H. McNeese. She tended elementary and secondary schools in Hallettsville, TX. In high school, she played basketball and excelled academically, and gradued as the Salutorian of her high school class. After high school, she went on to St. Philips Community College in San Antonio, Texas. As a testimony to her caring spirit, she pursued a career involved in helping people and, moved to Kansas City, MO to tend the highly ranked program General Hospital where she completed her degree as a Registered Nurse (R.N.). While pursuing her studies General Hospital, she stayed in temporary housing and a young man, who also worked the hospital and lived the other end of the block, walked down the street every day to talk to her. After some time, she began ding John Myers, and they were married on August 14, 1956. Two children came from this union, Ralph Wesley and Dorothy Lynn (Linda). Started her nursing career General Hospital in the Emergency Room and then went to work for the Federal Government as an occupional health nurse in the Office of Social Security. During this time, she continued to pursue her educion and achieved her Bachelor of Science degree from Ottawa University in 1979. Looking for another challenge th involved helping others, and not content to rest on her laurels, she pursued a career in real este after retiring from more than 30 years as a registered nurse. Although a very quiet person, Joyce was a friend, confidant, and a wonderful encouragement to many. She loved to laugh and shared many hours with friends and family laughing and telling stories with her unique sense of humor. She could be found with a broad smile, a listening ear, a helping hand and a joyful spirit, nurturing both family and friends in times of need. A devoted friend, she was always available to talk about almost any topic from current events, to the lest headlines. Her dear friend, Shyrlye White often said th “they would have solved all of the world’s problems” after each one of their conversions. Joyce enjoyed reading, and wching horse races and the services her beloved Palestine Missionary Baptist Church, her church home, where she was a cheerful giver and tithing member for over 40 years until her health prevented her from regular tendance. God called His child, Joyce Marie home on October 6, 2016. Her parents, A.B. and I.Q. Rice, as well as her two sisters, Dorothy and Iona, and her brother McRay Rice all preceded her in deh. She leaves to mourn, her husband of 60 years, John F. Myers, one son, Ralph W., one daughter, Dorothy Lynn (Linda), one sister, Johnnie M. Johnson, nephews, Royce and Terrell Johnson, three nieces, Karen Joyce, Jackie, and Jeannie Rice – all from Texas; nephews, Steve Coleman, Terrance Alford, and a niece Vinita Hicks – all from Oklahoma City, a host of close friends including Darlene Harris, Marion Hayes, Florene Knight, Shyrlye White and Florene Knight, as well as other relives and friends. With Gritude & Appreciion When it seemed th our loss was too gre to bear, we looked up and our friends were there, with words, written and spoken, open hearts and arms with smiling faces. You have comforted us and shared our grief. Words cannot adequely express the depth of our gritude to you, our friends and well-wishers, for the massive outpouring of love and support you have demonstred to us during the loss of our loved one. You have been a channel through which God has provided us strength to endure. Thank you to all of those who have travelled from near and far to comfort us in this time of need. The Myers-Rice family would like to send a special word of gritude and thanks The Spoilers Golf Club, Marion Hayes, Florene Knight, Shyrlye White, Kim Haith, Walter “Squeaky” Haith, and Kim Walton – your love and friendship have sustained us through the years and we are so blessed and eternally greful.
