Obituary for Dr. Floydetta Baker-Young
Dr. Floydetta Baker-Young, 80, Beloved Educator and Community Servant June 20, 1945 * June 21, 2025 Dr. Floydetta Baker-Young, a lifelong educator, community servant, and devoted family matriarch, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, just one day after celebrating her 80th birthday surrounded by loved ones. Born in Sumter, South Carolina, Dr. Baker-Young was the daughter of Pastor Norman Frederick Butler, Sr. and Gardenia Thompson. Her passion for education was evident early on, leading her to earn her degree from Morris College. Her teaching career spanned over 40 years across South Carolina, New Jersey, Colorado, Spain, and Missouri. In Denver Public Schools and later in Kansas City, she served as a special education teacher, instructional leader, and principal, always championing children with exceptional needs. Beyond the classroom, Dr. Baker-Young was deeply committed to community service. A faithful member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, she was active in the choir, Deaconess ministry, and senior outreach. Her civic engagement extended to the Order of Eastern Stars, the Order of the Golden Circle, AARP, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Kappa, and voter registration initiatives. Her generosity, leadership, and volunteerism left lasting imprints on every organization she touched. Dr. Baker-Young is survived by her adult son, Louis Anthony Baker (Altesa); grandchildren Ashar and Chai; brother Norman Frederick Butler (Sady); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Arthur Young; and her sisters Rev. Dr. Mazie Butler Ferguson and Commissioner Ella Scarborough; and her brother Rev. Melvin Butler. A guiding light to many, Dr. Floydetta Baker-Young*s legacy endures in the lives she shaped, the communities she uplifted, and the love she gave so freely.
